this article looks at how the 777 300ER came to be what makes american specifi version of the aircraft tick what the cabin actually feels like , and how the miami to londn route fits into the airlines broader widebody strategy

History

the Boeing 777 program was launched in Oct 1990 with a landmark order from united airlines . designed to fill the gap in Boeing lineup between the twin engine 767 & the four engine 747 . the aircraft rolled out in apr 1994 & made it is first flight that june entering commercial service with united in june 1995 it quickly become one of the most successful widebody programs in aviation history

the specific variant flown by american airline on the miami  Londom route the 777 300ER came later Boeing Launched what it initially called the 777 x program in feb 2000 , aiming to stretch the 777 range & capacity even further air France placed the launch order , & the aircraft made it is first flight on feb 24  2003 departing from paine field  in Everett, Washington Following roughly 1,600 hours of flight testing across two dedicated test aircraft, the FAA and EASA jointly certified the 777-300ER on March 16, 2004. Air France took delivery of the first production aircraft on April 29, 2004, becoming the launch customer. The 777 300ER went on to become the best  with hundreds delivered to airlines worldwide egistered under the type designation Boeing 777-323ER to reflect their specific GE90 engine fit and airframe configuration

Development

The 777 300ER was not simply a 777 300 with more fuel in the tanks Boeing engineers reworked several major structural elements to support the aircraft extended range mission The most visible change was the adoption of raked wingtips which replaced the standard wingtips used on the earlier 777 300 and reduced induced drag directly improving fuel efficiency and range
Underneath the skin the changes ran deeper Boeing reinforced the wing box and fuselage and fitted a modified main landing gear capable of handling a substantially higher maximum takeoff weight than the standard 300 model Updated fly by wire software also eliminated the need for a physical tailskid managing tail clearance electronically during takeoff rotation instead
Power came exclusively from the General Electric GE90 115B an engine that with a fan diameter of 128 inches became the most powerful commercial jet engine ever certified for flight That extra thrust paired with increased fuel capacity pushed the 777 300ER range out to roughly 7370 nautical miles in a typical two class configuration a significant jump over the standard 777 300 range of around 5600 nautical miles Since entering service Boeing has continued refining the type and the manufacturer has stated that technology improvements introduced over the production run have added several hundred nautical miles of range compared with early production aircraft
